This effectively ended HARLEQUIN’s short-lived career as a defector, although in December 1943 the German government approached the Canadians, in the belief that Wurmann was in that country, seeking his release as part of a prisoner exchange, on the grounds that he had been a member of the Armistice Commission. When consulted, MI5 recommended against allowing Wurmann to be sent back to Germany, arguing that his Armistice Commission role was merely an Abwehr cover. Wurmann’s MI5 file indicates that at the end of May 1945 he wrote to his initial MI5 case officer, Waldemar Caroe, to let him know that he anticipated his imminent release from his PoW camp at Ruston, Louisiana, and would be in touch again when he reached Cologne. There is no indication in the file that he ever did either.
